Surgery
Elbow surgery is a common part of Dr Nimon’s practice, with the most common procedure being Carpal Tunnel release. Whilst there are various methods of undertaking such a procedure, our preferred approach is usually undertaken under local anaesthetic alone, thus being safer in avoiding anaesthetic.
Large numbers of these procedures are performed each year by Dr Nimon and in 98% of cases (2014 audit) the results are dramatic, including a quick recovery and once again encouraging full use of the hand almost immediately.
In those patients who are concerned about having it done under local anaesthetic, a sedative procedure can be performed such that the patient goes off to sleep. Almost all patients who have the procedure done under a local anaesthetic would have it done again the same way.
Other Hand Surgical Procedures Include:-
- Release of other tendons such as in DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis (a painful condition involving the region at the base of the thumb).
- More extensive procedures involving the release of contractures of the fingers such as in Dupuyten’s contracture (an inherited condition involving the palmar fascia).
- Fractures of the wrist and scaphoid requiring surgical repair or splinting.
- Treatment of arthritis.
Elbow Surgery
Distal Bicep tendon injuries are regularly treated by Dr Gavin Nimon. A common presentation in middle age, and often a return to work injury, Gavin oftens a balanced approach to treatment offering surgery for repair. It is a condition that should be traeted earlier, and we will give priority to those who suffer this injury.
Common Elbow Conditions
Carpal and Cubital Tunnel
Nerve entrapments are common presenations to Dr Nimon. The most common condition treated is carpal tunnel but ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow (cubital tunnel) also is an issue.
Elbow & Radial Head Fractures
A fall on an outstretched arm can not only lead to wrist injuries but also the Elbow. Radial head fractures are a common injury that can easily be missed after a fall, and so it’s important to always seek advice if pain is not settling.
Distal Bicep Injuries
Whilst long head of bicep tears can be treated without surgery, with good results, there is evidence that a distal bicep tear can lead to weakness of some movements. Distal bicep tears are a common presentation to Dr Nimon, who can assess and discuss treatment options.
Tennis & Golfers Elbow (Epicondylitis)
The most common elective elbow condition is tennis elbow. Often self limitting, but can give a lot of grief to the sufferer. Dr Nimon has extensive experience iun these conditions.
Olecranon Bursitis
Known as “Student’s Elbow” and can occur after direct trauma or from repetitive pressure, this presents as a swelling and can become infected.
